Dog
Materials
•20 beads for main body
•24 beads for head & ears (can be smaller size beads from body)
•2 beads for eyes
•1 bead for nose
•4 beads for legs
•3 beads for tail
•1 bead for tongue
•4 seed beads
•Clear fishing wire (monofilament), thread size and length will depend on your bead size
Instructions
The following instructions are written for the color combination below; substitute with your color when using the instructions.
Body – Green (G), legs/tail – black (BK) head/ears – white (W), eyes/nose – black (BK), tongue – red (R)
1.Cut the thread (3.5 feet), color thread ends with black or red permanent markers to make them more visible if needed.
2.Start with 4 green (G) beads, crossing thread (對穿) on the last bead to make a 4-beads circle (first layer of body). Center the beads – two threads should have same length
3.2nd layer working around the first circle, make two legs and tail
a.R3 (G), C (對穿 or 打扣); you’ll have two 4-beads circles, one from the first layer and one from the second layer (sharing one bead in the middle). Lay the new 4-beads circle on the table and the first layer 4-beads on your left, form a rectangle angle.
b.L2 (1 BK, 1 seed bead), skip the seed bead, go through new BK bead (倒穿) (this forms the right back leg);
c.LS1 (左過一) (through the bead on the first layer), R2(G), C (對穿 or 打扣); (still making sure that the dog stays on the table, this is the 2nd side of the new layer. Make sure that this side is vertical from the previous side.)
d.LS1 (左過一) (through the bead on the first layer that is on your left side), L3(BK), go through same starting bead (green) from right to left, this forms the tail; (回穿)
e.R2 (G), C(對穿or 打扣); (note, this is the 3rd side of 2nd layer, it is the back of the dog)
f.LS1 (左過一) (through the bead on the first layer that is on your left side), L2 (1 BK, 1 seed bead), skip the seed bead, go through new BK bead (this forms the left back leg) (倒穿);
g.LS1 (左過一) (through the first bead of 2nd layer circle to connect the 1st and 2nd layer, R1(G), C (對穿);
4.3rd layer working around the 2nd layer, lay the dog on its tail side, with tail going towards right hand side to start with. You can rotate the sides as you work through different sides, but always make sure that the dog lays on its tail side.
a.R3 (G), C(對穿or 打扣); (this the 1st side of 3rd layer)
b.LS1 (左過一) ( (through the bead on the 2nd layer), R2(G), C(對穿); (forms 2nd side of 3rd layer)
c.LS1 (左過一) (through the bead on the 2nd layer), R2(G), C(對穿); (forms 3rd side of 3rd layer)
d.LS2 (左過二) (through last free bead on the 2nd layer and the first bead on the 3rd layer), R1(G), C(對穿)
5.Add two legs (still makes sure that the dog lays on its tail side, with tail going towards right hand side
a.LS1 (左過一) , L2 (1 BK, 1 seed bead), skip seed bead, go through new BK bead (this forms the left front leg); (倒穿)
b.LS1 (左過一) , L2 (1 BK, 1 seed bead), skip seed bead, go through new BK bead (this forms the right front leg); (倒穿)
c.LS2 (左過二) to position two threads crossing at the top of body
6.Work on head, with eyes and two ears – standing the dog up, with tail closes to you to start with, but rotate the dog counter clock wide as you go through each step.
a.R3(W), C(對穿); (add a ring if you want to use the dog as an accessory)
b.R4(1 W, 1 BK for eye, 2 W), C(對穿); (this is the left side of face)
c.LS1 (左過一) (make sure that it is through the body colored center bead, i.e., neck, this bead is from the previous layer), R2(W), C(對穿);
d.LS1 (左過一) (through W – head color bead, make sure that the ring stays in the middle of neck, ie, don’t go through the ring), R3(1W, 1 BK for eye, 1W), C(對穿);
e.LS2 (左過二) to position the thread to make left ear
f.R3 (W), go through same start bead from left to right to form the right ear; (回穿)
g.L3(W), go through same start bead from right to left to form the left ear; (回穿)
h.R1(W), C(對穿); (make sure you hold two ears tight together and pulling threads tight)
i.LS1 (左過一) (through black eye), RS1 (右過一) (through black eye), R1 (W), C(對穿);
7.Add nose and tongue and finish
a.R3(1W, 1 BK for nose, 1W), C(對穿);
b.LS1 (左過一) , R2(W), C(對穿);
c.LS1 (左過一) , R2(1R for tongue, 1W), C(對穿);
d.LS2 (左過二) , R1 (W), C(對穿);
e.Go through other beads to secure the shape of the nose & tongue
f.Tie two threads several times (use surgeon knots) to secure the knots, hide threads by going through existing beads before cutting off. Follow the old thread routes to avoid thread showing between beads.
Note:
•L – left thread (i.e., thread coming out of left side of bead)
•R –right thread (i.e., thread coming out of right side of bead)
•C – crossing thread through the last new bead on the thread (對穿)
•S – step through the bead on either left or right side depending on previous letter
•Number – number of beads to put on the thread
•Keep thread tight when working with beads so that no loose thread between beads by pushing beads together and tightening the threads, don’t pull threads
•Can use different size of beads for body/legs/tail and heads/ears/eyes/nose/tongue
